Statement by Secretary Clinton on World Press Freedom Day
Courageous journalists across the globe risk their freedom and their lives to provide independent information on government actions and their consequences; report the news from conflict zones; expose crime, corruption and wrongdoing; and reveal human rights violations – all despite efforts, in some cases, by governments and others, to control what people read, hear and think.
President Obama on World Press Freedom Day 2010
World Press Freedom Day is observed every year on May 3 to remind us of the critical importance of this core freedom. It is a day in which we celebrate the invaluable role played by the media in challenging abuses of power, identifying corruption, and informing all citizens about the important issues that shape our world. It is also a day for us to sound the alarm about restrictions on the media as well as the threats, violence or imprisonment of many of its members and their families because of their work.
Report Finds Press Freedoms Declining Worldwide
Washington — Freedom of the press declined in almost every region of the world in 2009, according to a study released April 29 by Freedom House, an international nongovernmental organization that researches and monitors democratic freedoms around the world. The report, Freedom of the Press 2010: A Global Survey of Media Independence, found that press freedom declined for the eighth consecutive year, and only one in six people lives in a country with genuinely free media.
Michelle Obama Tells Youth to Help Empower Each Other
Washington — In her first solo international visit as first lady, Michelle Obama asked young people in Mexico and around the world to empower each other through service and volunteer work. That will help spread opportunities to other members of what she described as the “youth bulge” — the largest-ever global population of people between the ages of 15 and 24 who now make up 20 percent of the world’s citizens. Speaking to students at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City April 14, the first lady said young people everywhere possess the potential to succeed to the benefit of their societies and the world at large, even “in some of the most unlikely places.”
Drug Violence Shreds Communities, Clinton Says
A team of U.S. Cabinet secretaries and senior advisers met with Mexican senior leaders for a full day of talks in Mexico City March 23. They launched an enhanced security strategy, under development for nearly a year, that is designed to help Mexico strengthen its law enforcement and judicial systems in the face of escalating drug-trafficking violence that has killed thousands and spread across the porous borders of both nations.
