On September 15 and 16 (beginning late evening September 15), Mexico will celebrate the anniversary of its independence. This year, the atmosphere will be even more festive than usual as Mexico prepares for its bicentennial in 2010. Large groups of people are expected to gather in different parts of the city to celebrate, especially the Zocalo. A parade will take place on Paseo de la Reforma, traveling from the Zocalo to Chapultepec Park, on Wednesday, September 16. Paseo de la Reforma will be closed from approximately 0600 – 400pm on September 16, as will many nearby streets.
During these festive times, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City encourages all American citizens residing in or traveling in Mexico to use extra caution. The local police will also be strictly enforcing traffic laws and are expected to be deployed in large numbers.
In particular, the U.S. Embassy recommends the following security precautions:
- Use extra caution when driving or walking (a high number of intoxicated drivers are expected to be on the roads).
- Do not drive under the influence of alcohol (local police will be strictly enforcing traffic laws).
- Use extra caution when driving (more pedestrians are expected in the entertainment and restaurant districts and streets surrounding these areas).
- If you plan to join the street celebrations, avoid large crowds and be extra vigilant with your belongings (many thieves will use this opportunity to steal and as always, even peaceful gatherings can quickly turn violent).
- If traveling outside of Mexico City, avoid nighttime travel due to road conditions and traffic. Use toll roads where available.
Any U.S. citizens in Mexico who have not already done should register with the State Department at http://www.travel.state.gov/
