“I’m proud of our long and continued support of the Benjamin Franklin Library in Guadalajara and delighted to donate this collection of American children’s classics to the new children’s wing,” said U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza. “These books will improve the understanding of the United States among Guadalajara’s youngest citizens while fostering a love of reading and libraries.”
In a ceremony held in Guadalajara on January 21, Ambassador Garza inaugurated the new children’s wing of the Benjamin Franklin Library that is housed in the library at the Centro Universitario de Ciencias Económicas y Administrativa (CUCEA) at the University of Guadalajara. Ambassador Garza presented a donation of American children’s books to the Rector of the University of Guadalajara Lic. Jose Trinidad Padilla López.
The Benjamin Franklin Library in Guadalajara has a long history in the city. Founded in 1949 by the United States Information Service, the collection was designed to improve knowledge about the United States. Previously housed at the University of Guadalajara, it moved to its present location at CUCEA in 2000 when former Ambassador Davidow inaugurated the site. A few original members of the Benjamin Franklin Library who were present as children when the library opened in 1949 were among the honored guests at the ceremony today.
The Benjamin Franklin Library is a popular and well-used resource for local residents. The new children’s wing and the infusion of new reading material should make it even more popular among young readers and scholars.
