The United States government through its Embassy in Mexico and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), through its School of Philosophy and Literature and its Center for Research on North America, signed an agreement today that establishes the Henry David Thoreau Chair, as an interdisciplinary professorship to promote knowledge in multiple areas of interest for both countries.
“Today, through the signing of this accord, we formalize our collaboration with UNAM invoking the multidisciplinary and visionary spirit of Henry David Thoreau,” said U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Antonio O. Garza, Jr. who presided over the event with Dr. Juan Ramon de la Fuente, Chancellor of UNAM. “This is an event that is not only important in substantive terms, but also as a symbol of the mutual respect that we share.”
The Henry David Thoreau Chair includes activities related to the areas of the humanities, the arts, political and social science, public policy, justice and public administration, the environment, education, international relations, and social communications. UNAM and the United States government will support the activities of this project, which include the participation of Mexican and American specialists and researchers, in different disciplines, in order to conduct conferences and courses that promote mutual understanding and educational collaboration between both nations.
