Mexico City, December 11, 2004 – The U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Tony Garza paid his respect to the family of Army specialist Corporal Sergio Diaz Varela, who was buried today with military honors in Guadalajara at the request of his mother.
“Our hearts go out to the family of this brave soldier,” said Ambassador Garza. “We honor the sacrifice of Corporal Diaz, a proud son of Mexican parents, who became an American and chose to fight for his new country, and in so doing he honored us all.”
Corporal Diaz, 21, was killed in action in Ramadi, Iraq on November 24th. He was serving with the 2nd Infantry Division, First Brigade, 503rd Infantry Battalion, Company B Rifle, based in South Korea – on duty in Iraq. Nine army soldiers from the honors team came to Mexico for the funeral from Fort Hood Texas, as did General Ken Keen of Fort Carson, Colorado, in representation of the Secretary of the Army.
