Alleged Cop-Killer, Michael Paul Astorga, Captured in Mexico

Mexico City, April 3, 2006
Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza:

“Michael Paul Astorga, one of the FBI’s “Ten Most-Wanted” fugitives, whose crime was featured recently on the ‘Americas Most Wanted’ television program, is now off the streets and in custody in Mexico thanks to the cooperation of law enforcement officers in our two countries.

In a pre-dawn raid this morning, Mexican law enforcement agents arrested fugitive Michael Paul Astorga in Cuidad Juarez, Mexico.

On March 22, 2006, Astorga allegedly shot and killed New Mexico Deputy Sheriff James McGrane during a traffic stop along Highway 338 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and promptly fled the scene of the shooting. U.S. authorities are now working with their Mexican counterparts to bring Astorga to justice in the United States. Astorga is also wanted by authorities in the State of New Mexico for his alleged involvement in a murder committed in Bernalillo County on November 5, 2005.

We extend our appreciation to Mexico’s state and federal law enforcement authorities, who used information provided by their American counterparts to apprehend this vicious fugitive. Once again, the efficient exchange of information among our law enforcement officials has resulted in the rapid apprehension of a fugitive, and demonstrated that our border cannot be used to flee justice.”
