Mexico City, September 8, 2006 – “The apprehension in Mexico and expulsion to the United States of Norte-Valle Drug Cartel Kingpin Jaime Maya-Duran shows the determination of U.S. and Mexican law enforcement authorities to pursue the most dangerous criminals, including those who thought they were untouchable,” said Ambassador Antonio O. Garza, Jr.
“Using information supplied by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, agents of the Mexican Attorney Generals Office, known by its Spanish acronym as the ‘PGR,’ apprehended Maya-Duran on September 6. A Colombian citizen, Maya-Duran is accused of being a key lieutenant to Luis Hernando Gomez-Bustamante, the alleged leader of the Norte Valle Cartel who has been held in Cuba since his attempt to enter that country with a false passport two years ago,” he added.
Said Garza, “One of the principal leaders of the gang responsible for illegally importing approximately half of the cocaine sold in the United States will now face federal charges in New York City. Cooperation between Mexican and U.S. police agencies and tools such as the $US 5 million reward we offered for Maya-Duran’s apprehension demonstrate that accused felons on the run cannot escape justice for very long.”
