Mexico City, October 24, 2006 -- “This year alone, Mexico has extradited 50 fugitives who allegedly committed crimes in the United States and thought they would enjoy free and unfettered lives south of the border,” said Garza.
“They were wrong,” he added.
“The 50 fugitives extradited so far this year includes 24 accused murderers, plus others wanted for crimes in the United States ranging from drug trafficking to sexual assault. Thanks to solid cooperation from the Mexican government, extraditions have risen steadily and three-fold since the year 2001, when just 17 fugitives hiding in Mexico were brought to the United States to face justice.”
“Numbers tell only part of the story. The fugitives now facing their accusers in America include Martin Torres Vega, wanted for serial rape and murder in Austin, Texas; Francisco Rafael Arellano Felix, who faces drug-trafficking charges in southern California; and Roberto Ramirez, who allegedly murdered a young woman in Chicago.”
“The message the U.S. and Mexican governments are sending cannot be clearer: we are working together to guarantee that neither country will ever be a refuge for those who seek to escape justice,” said Garza.
