The United States Commemorates the Sixth Anniversary of
the
September 11th Terrorist Attacks in a Ceremony at the U.S.
Embassy
Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico
City, September 11, 2007 — “September 11, 2001, changed the
course of history. Six years ago today, terrorists seized
four passenger airplanes and used them to brutally murder
nearly three thousand innocent people in New York, Washington,
D.C. and Pennsylvania. Mexican nationals were among the thousands
of victims killed on September 11, 2001.
“Recognizing a grave threat both to the United States and
to democracy itself, President Bush has channeled America’s
resources into a global alliance to fight the worldwide threat
posed by the Al Qaeda terrorist network and its supporters.
Working with our allies on five continents, we have made substantial
progress towards the goal of making our world safer from those
who want to achieve nothing less than mass murder on a global
scale. The six years since the September 11 tragedy have seen
terrorists and their supporters brought to justice, their
shell companies and assets seized, and a number of sinister
plots stopped before they could be executed, saving countless
lives.
“However, much more needs to be done before we are all truly
safe from terrorism. Today the threat to freedom remains both
real and global. In the last two weeks, authorities have uncovered
plots in Denmark and Germany linked to Al Qaeda, plots that
aimed to kill innocent civilians. Terrorist bombings have
killed dozens in Pakistan, in India, and these brutal attacks
continue in Iraq. It is through collective vigilance and strong
cooperation between freedom-loving countries that many of
these plots have been detected or deterred.
“Some have suggested it is no longer appropriate to commemorate
9-11; that six years have passed and that we should now let
it go. I say we must remember history, to avoid repeating
it. Today, let us honor the memory of all who have died by
pledging to do whatever is necessary to prevent a reoccurrence
of this terrorist outrage in any country.”
