Ambassador Garza honors 175 years of Cooperation in Matamoros, Tamaulipas

Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza

Matamoros, Tamaulipas, September 21, 2007 — “This year marks the 175th anniversary of the U.S. Consulate in Matamoros, a milestone of U.S. diplomatic history. Since the consulate opened, diplomatic and consular officials have helped countless numbers of Americans in need, have adjudicated hundreds of thousands of visas, and have served as the face of the American government in this important part of Mexico.

“Just as important as the work of my countrymen throughout the years, however, has been the patience, support, and neighborly good will from the city and people of Matamoros. Other American diplomatic posts from around the world have come and gone – but none have been as steadfast in remaining open in service to Americans and Mexicans. It is the graciousness and generosity of the people of Matamoros that has allowed the consulate to work continuously here since 1832.

“This region is a perfect example of the strong ties that connect our countries. We have faced difficult situations in the past and overcome them based on our commitment to each other as partners, friends, and, in many cases, family. I congratulate and honor those who have worked hard to tear down barriers between us and who have worked towards making our relationship stronger and more productive.

“May God bless Mexico and the United States and may He especially bless the uniquely wonderful relationship that we are so fortunate to share and celebrate in Matamoros.”
